Unhappy bucking problem with 96' cherokee

I'm experiencing a strange problem with my 96' cherokee. 6 cylinder 4.0 liter standard 5 speed. The jeep starts to buck and shudder. Seems to be worse when I ease up on the gas peddle. Fuel consumption has gone way up as well. I also can detect a smell as though something has over heated. I thought maybe a fuel line was crimped or a bad fuel filter but my mechanic has checked these things out and says these are o.k.He cleaned up the points and carburator today and it's running better though after about a half hours driving I thought I felt the bucking starting again. This all started with a check engine lite going on. Can anybody help? . Any help or thoughts would be appreciated. Thomas Peabody
