I don't know if you're up to date with maintenance, but here is the normal Nissan recommended schedule:
http://www.maxima.org/shoptalk/sub_c...en_sched.shtml

It will give you a place to start. But 11.5 mpg? Is it running normally?

It does not appear to show any signs of trouble. IT has not had a tune -up since it has been new.

Is it time for one?

If so what are the components that I have to make sure get changed.

I have a 2000 Max SE the link above say's to change the spark plugs at 60,000 miles. Is that right I thought I read their good for 100,000 miles?

I changed my plugs after 83k miles. The original NGK plugs were dead, should of been replaced earlier. I recommend that you do.

Get NGK platinium plugs. I got NGK Irodium, the most expensive ones, and they end up running cold because I run the car stock.

Re: 235 miles from a full tank. Please help

If the car is doing a lot of short trips (less than 5 miles) and most of your dirivng is in stop & go traffic, the mileage you're getting is understandable.

Double check that your wife isn't driving with her left foot resting on the brake pedal, as well (something I've noticed people doing a lot more recently).

No cap and rotor on the maxima. All electronic distrobution, even through the latest generations if I remember correctly.

How's the idle? Choppy? Could be a shoddy Throttle Position Sensor - as I've posted before.

Could also check:

fuel filter
air filter
PCV valve
fuel return line

give it a shot. let us know what's up.

Did you replace them your self or have someone do it. Just curious if you did it yourself how long it may take and how hard it is to get to the
plugs near the firewall. I thought 100k sounded to good to be true, did you notice a difference?

Re: 235 miles from a full tank. Please help

On my 99 Maxima SE, we noticed the feul economy dropped the closer we got to 100K on the original NKG plugs We replaced the plugs (took maybe 15 minutes tops) and boom-we now get about 450 miles per tank on your average city/highway mix. We also noticed a HUGE increase in performance.

It wasn't difficult at all to do--even I could do it and I am nothing but an engine newbie.

While you are replacing the plugs, switch out the air filter and do a complete oil change as well--your basic tune up.

Torvan:

I don'nt want to sound like a jerk but I have a few questions.

How big is your tank?

Do you get 450 miles mostly highway and all the way empty, I mean with the light on and everything?

I know spark plugs can make a difference but 450 miles city-highway sounds a bit much or my 2000 sucks way to much gas. I recently got 350 miles to 14.5 gallons thats about 24 MPG from honest city-highway driving. I also have a bike rack on my roof which may cause a little drag but can't be that big of a deal. If you got 450 miles on 15 gallons thats
30 miles per gallon if you were bone dry maybe you used 16 gallons thats 28 MPG. What do you get on highway driving 600 miles? just kidding hahaha. Let me know if you have done anything else to get such good milage.
