forced air intake

I know it sounds silly, but has anyone put a forced air system on thier metro? if so any noticable differnce? I like the idea of the extreem gas milage that the 3cyl gives, and am selling my car now, but am a little worried about switching from a car with a 150hp engine to a 50hp engine. not that I use my car like it should be, my only real problem I think woudl be when I drive home from college every few months, I either have to go over very steep hills(going from western NY to central) or take the thruway, which seems like a bad idea with a car with very little power.
any ideas?

Ram-air will have minimal gains on the little 3 banger. Probably un-noticable. Ram air really only gives a noticible power gain at between 80-100mph. A K&N filter, and a 2" exhaust would wake the car up quite a bit tho. It also only weighs 1700lbs, so hills shouldnt be a problem at all. If anything, just downshift. I drove my automatic 3cyl metro convertible through the mountains with no problems at all. I got to Tenessee from Detroit on less than $20 in gas too. (year and a half ago)

Hey Chaz. If you can, buy the 4 door sedan. I would recommend the manual shift version since automatic gear will not give you enough control on your driving.

Several weeks ago, I ask about the IAT sensor modification, which is bassically a 5,8 kohm resistor that would give your 1.3 engine like 7 more HP for real. The problem in here is when you set this mod, your car will run rich (meanning combustion mixture will be rich) when this happens, the whole system would dispose more carbon. Because of this, you could expect eventually obstruction in your catalyst cleaner, valves and exhaust in general. The second problem is that you fuel economy would decrease from 40 to 30 mpg.

Just to tell you, another tip I did on my car since I bought it was to set the engine time (I do not know the exact word, the time you set with the distributor) which is original 7 degrees to 9 degrees to get the an improved explosion. Well, I do not know how "improved" is it, but it works for me.

Metro is a great car overall. I own a 96 manual sedan (120 Kmiles) and use it every day for work. So far, in 18 months, (25 Kmiles) just oil changes and fuel has been enough.

the K&N filter and 2" exhaust, how hard are these to install? I have installed a muffler before on my old 88 tracer(may it rest in pieces)
and I know I can just downshift to get power, but my thing is, if you downshift, normaly you need to cut back on speed too, the tracer had this problem, and now I am driving a grand am, where if I downshift, I waist gas most of the time for the extra kick
but if you think the 3cyl is powerful enough to climb mountains, then I will start looking for one, speed isnt really that big a deal, just I know smaller weaker cars have trouble climbing the mountains, the tracer was ok if I was in it, but when I added a friend or two, things got bad, and if I added a friend and luggage, then I would just take the truway cause it couldnt go over 20mph up the hill

Please note we are not talking about speed in here. We are talking about HP on your engine. A 1.3 4 cyl engine/manual transmission will delivery from 70 to 80 HP. Good enough to get a ride for 4 people (better thin) plus luggage with a decent performance.

Regarding the air filter mod, I had heard it doesn't help too much if your car is not injected.

On the other hand, the 2" muffle would decrease your mpg considerably and give you the same thing about running rich. Anyway, just take your oxygen catalyst off and prepare some money to get it fixed after a year or so.

BTW, have you consider the 1.3 GT option for the before 95 Geo's?

The GT's are a gem, and sooo rare. My 91' Swift GT was sweet. I remember when I first got it, bone stock, 100,000 miles. It was me, my gf, and my 290lb friend, and some luggage in the trunk on a road trip, and I raced a kid in his older Neon R/T and beat him really bad! Not to mention they're actually quite comfortable, fairly quiet, handle excellent, 4 wheel disc brakes, optional a/c, and have a decent sound system. They require little maintenence, and are quite zippy, and will handle hills and mountains with no problem whatsoever. They're 100hp stock. And there are sooo many mods you can do to them.
