Ignition Key Sticking

Every so often my ignition key is sticking. It seems that the steering wheel lock isn't letting me turn the key completely off to extract it. I've been told to squirt some WD-40 in the ignition, but this seems like suicide

. Anybody have a less scary suggestion?
