Question Speed sensitive steering on the fritz!!

The steering on my 98' Tahoe is giving me some problems, I got a 130,000 miles on it now, and when I am going somewhere between 30-45 mph it feels like I hit a patch of ice when the steering wheel is in the 10 O'clock & 1 O'clock positions, but not every time only once in a while. Bad sensor maybe? If so where would it be? And how to check it? Also all steering components are new so that rules any of them out.

Thanks for any help!!

My 97 has a similar problem. I was told by the dealer it was due to a bad pitman and idler arm. The steering gear box was replaced though. I did have another shop look at the two arms and both were fine. After the work done at the dealer, the problem was gone. But lately the "play" in the wheel has come back. The steering pump is fairly new and all the steering components up front are good. A bad steering sensor could cause the problem, but I'm not sure where exactly it's located. I believe it sits around the base of the steering column/shaft, like a ring. Also heard it could be a sensor off the steering pump itself, but I've never seen any connectors.

My guess is that 95 through current models have the steering sensor, but don't know for sure.

If you do have a bad steering sensor and are mechanically inclined you can buy and replace the part yourself. The list price is $59.65 but you can get it for $34 at GMpartsdirect.com. The part is called a Steering Position Sensor and the part number is 26064468. At the dealer I was told it would take about 1 1/2 hours and be like $130+ for labor, plus the $59.65 for the part.

I had the same problem in my 99 Yukon. It was the sensor( speed sensitive steering). I think it was around $60 and very simple to change. It looks like a thick plastic washer, it is on the steering columb near the brake pedal. You disconnect the plug-in connector, remove the bolt that is on the shaft seperate the linkage and slide the old one off and the new one on. Reinstall in reverse order. Total time to replace 10min. It is easy to see when you know what you are looking for,and without disassembling the dash.
Good luck, hope this helps.
