first airbrush paint job: custom mixed color. <not a progress thread>

this is my first time sucesfully painting a model with an airbrush, all the colors are custom mixed by me, the main color is a 50/50 mix of plasikote white and plastikote flame red, then when that was dry i mixed plastikote clear with 2 small drops of mettalic red to get a very clear red, i sprayed that on and came out with a pink with red metalflakes that the camera dont pickup well, i will take out dorr pics in the daylight.

pictures do it no justice it looks alot better in person, outdoor pics will help damn flash makes it look odd.

tell me what ya think.

That looks just fine to me, job well done! I can see a faint sparcle from the metalflakes, but please take som outdoors shots to, so it really lits up. Otherwise it's always better not using the flash, instead you put as much light on the subject as you can with whatever is at hand. If your camera can compensate the white balance, do that and then it's not that important what type of light source you use. You can always correct the image in the computer later if it gets a little on the dark side or if the colors look odd. Again, good job...please show some progress pics soon.

thanks, i just did some flames on the hood, the color on then is also a custom mix. i mixed too much red in the clear for the hood and it came out darker than the rest of the car, lol. but the dual action brush came in handy when doing the flames, i was able to spray light in the beggining and full color at the end. here are some pics.

like i said way too much red in the clear on the hood, ohh well you learn from mistakes.

man jesse, i have wasted 4 1oz bottles of paint mostly because i use more paint than is needed because on my first try at painting a model everything was going good untill i ran out of paint so the whole car was painted and the roof wasent, lol. then my paint was fucking up cuz i wasent thinning the paint as the guy at the store told me it was prethinned, well i remembered that i was told it had to be like milk, so i looked at the paint swirled it around a little and it was no where near milk like, so i thinned it down and the pictured above are what came out. i noticed even though i fucked up on it 2 times, each time the dry paint was 100% smoother than my spraycan paint jobs, so umm i will never go back to spray cans, lol. next time i will make sure to clear the hood with the same clear as the body insted of mixing new shit and putting too much red in it,lol. ohh well, the good thing is the whole car looks like glass after polishing and waxing, i wanted to go take pics outside but we are havung a real bad storm and are under a tornado warning and dont want to get my model sucked up now do i,lol.

Damn. Nice job on the flames. The paint is nice too. You can't beat an airbrush for paint jobs. Unless you are P-man. :P Once I switched, I never looked back.

i think you told me you were using those duplicolor touch up paints, is that the paints the guy told you were prethinned? I've never thought about using those, pretty good idea.

I had the same problem with getting the metal-flake to show through on camera shots with my NSX, and had no luck doing shots outside in the sunlight either. (the paint was a mix of Tamiya Sky Blue, Clear Blue, Purple, and a bit of Chrome Silver.... it came out ALMOST like a Kameleon(sp) paint job, where the purple is only visible in the sunlight).

Glad I'm not the only airbrush paint-mixxing newbie around here.
