Key problem...anyone else?

Heya...just a quick question. Has anyone else ever had problems with their key not working all of a sudden? For some strange reason, mine doesn't work to start the car until my freaking thumb is almost bleeding from trying to get it to turn in the ignition. I suppose I need a new key, but don't these cars have some sort of a security feature? Does that mean that I have to get it from a dealer? I have an extra which I had cut, but it also works only for opening the doors and trunk, never has worked in the ignition. Any ideas?

Re: Key problem...anyone else?

Alright, well here's a story to tell your kids, or something. Cavaliers have shitty ignitions. They get to the poiint where you can basically stick ANY kEY or ANY thing in there and start them, you might want to just pull the ignition key hole out and get a new one. there is not much you can do about this. i'd be worried about my starter and messing up my car. but don't worry this is a usual cav. problem and it is not goign to cause major damage. You can probably just use the key you ahve made for the doors. Let me know what year it is will you?

Mine is a '96...called GM about it today, they can make a key from the VIN for about $7, but chances are it's my tumblers. Going to try spraying a bit of WD-40 in it to see if it works at all, if not, then I'll try a new key. My key works fine in the door locks and trunk, though, so even though it's pretty worn, I'm putting my bets on the stupid ignition tumblers. Pain in the @$$ to replace, I hear. I don't think my starter is at risk, since I can't even turn the key at all...when it finally does work, it works fine. But my poor thumb is nicely bruised from trying it for a half hour every time I need to drive somewhere!

What a nuisance!

But I still wuv my car!
