Smell gas when idling...

Hi, I've done extensive work on my 1992 GMC Safari "W" engine lately: including replacing the entire fuel line and fuel pump... (don't ask!).

Anyways, I've always been getting abysmal gas mileage but recent work has brought up my power and mileage somewhat.

But when the engine idles, I get quite the smell of gas, even sometimes while driving. I had a "private" GM mechanic for a while and he suspected the spider assembly was cracked, allowing gas to leak out, but he never ended up checking it and I have lost touch with him.

I talked with a dealer and there were like, "oh yeah: change the spider assembly", but no explanation or test.

So just wanted to ask what people's opinion is of symptoms that indicate that the spider assembly needs changing. My power is pretty good, but still not brilliant for the 4.3 (I think).
