Rattling noise around 2500RPM - Please Help!

Hi,

my 95 jetta 4cyl makes a terrible rattling noise in the mid 2000s rpm.

it's fine at idle, great at 4000+ at high speeds, it's just ~2500rpm where it rattles badly.

makes shifting very annoying - any ideas what the problem might be?

thanks!

jason

thats ur exhaust manifold heat shield a tinny rattle means its the shield a more of a hard metal hitting metal is farther back on the exhaust. just take it out. mine would rattle at 2900 rpm but since it moved down to 2500 rpm i have no choice but to get rid it. Lots of people has just removed it intstead of trying to fix it or replace it and have gone years without any problems. also if the sound is farther back make sure the u-bolt that holds the resonator to the middle 3ft pipe is short or it will rattle on that brace that it sits above. and make sure the muffler is alligned with the resonator so it's piping is far away from the aluminum heat shield on the underbody. jetta exhausts problems won't leave me alone.
