1998 Cavalier clutch/transmission problem

I am having problems with my 1998 Cavalier and need some advice. My son was driving the car last night and downshifted from 5th to 4th gear. After shifting into 4th gear, the car would not go anywere. It is like the clutch is not enguaging. You can put it in any gear and release the clutch and the car does not move. Acts like the clutch is bad, but I thought that when the clutch goes out it starts to slip and gets progressively worse. So I am thinking maybe it is something else. I have checked the shifter linkage and it appears to be functioning properly. Where the linkage attaches to the transmission there is a box that unbolts. Is it possible that something in that box is causing the transmisson not to go into gear? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
John

Is this a Z24 or base model? If its a base model I dont know much about them and I would go here http://www.j-body.org , sign up, goto the transmission forum and make the same post there.
