99 Cherokee Tranny Noise

Any suggestions or advice will be greatly appreciated! Only when the Jeep is in drive (Automatic), when stopped, a noise comes from what I suspect to be the tranny. A knocking noise, with no rythym. The tranny doesn't seem to have any other irregularities. Any Ideas?

had a similiar problem in 97 Cherokee Sport. It sounded sometimes like a lower end bearing. I changed the oil and the noise was still there, occassionaly, so I was sure it wasn't a lower bearing. Took it to a trans shop, they inspect and determine that the flywheel had cracked and warped. The repaired the entire thing for $425 (us). It might be that.

Re: 99 Cherokee Tranny Noise

Actually I had a similar problem. I have a 99 Cherokee. I heard a rattling noise only at stoplights when the car was in gear. Hold down your transfer case shifter and see if that stops the noise. If it does, there is a service bulletin out and Jeep will replace the bushings in your transfer case shifter. I read this on another forum and it cured that knocking noise. The noise was driving me crazy. Hope this helps.
