i have a '96 GC with a 4.0 that has terrible oil pressure. It stays at around 20 psi. If i travel about 30 miles and come to a stop, it will drop all the way to zero and bounce back to 20 psi...what's causing this!! do i need to replace my oil pump or my sending unit or what????

Re: '96 GC 4.0 low oil pressure
Hi snizzzake
I’ve had this symptom on my 96 5.2L. There are a few other possibilities that will cause this problem but the simplest replacement solution is the pressure sensor. When you have the sensor out, use a “T” fitting to install a mechanical pressure gauge along with the new sensor. That way you will have an accurate comparison between the electric gauge on the dash and the new master gauge. Sometimes the pressure regulator spool in the oil pump will stick in a high flow position when the engine is reving. When the engine goes to an idle the oil pump produces less flow and if the spool stays open in the stuck position, your oil pressure will be quite low until the spool “unsticks” and moves to the position appropriate for the oil flow at an idle. That was the case with my engine. The gauge needle was all over the place. What I did was use one of the engine flushing products according to the directions on the bottle. It seems to have removed any gum or varnish from the affected parts and the gauge reading is much more stable. I also switched to a synthetic oil. Using 5w30, my oil pressure at cruising speed increased slightly. let us know how your doing with this problem JD |

Re: '96 GC 4.0 low oil pressure
i have a 96 grand with the 6-cylinder, i have had that problem for a while...but it would go away for like a month and then come back...
recently the pressure fell to 0 and stayed there. 2 days agao i looked and i was leaking oil. it was come from the actual oil pressure switch, located on the passenger side of the engine. it looks like a electrical plug but oil just started sparying out of it. i will be changing it this week. i will keep u guys updated. that may be all of u guys problem too, it just may not have gotten as bad as mine yet. |

Re: Re: '96 GC 4.0 low oil pressure
I have had the same problem on my 96 JGC. I replaced the sending unit sensor from on top of the oil filter housing outlet and fixed the problem. Good luck. 10 min repair. Piece of CAKE!
