Guess I'll introduce myself
Dunno if this was the proper place to do it so here goes anyway.
Been lurking the forum for about 6 months now... never bothered posting anything seeing as the 'street races' I get into never amount to anything worth sharing. The best "race" I ever had was with a Viper... I kept up with him so I felt pretty good about it (residential street, on the highway he would have killed me). But I couldn't tell if he was really trying or just toying with me. I've taken my car to LACR two times, both times with my old 289 V8 engine which placed me at 15.8 at 93mph (talk about horrible launches). Here's a link to a website I threw up real quick to get some pics on. http://www.geocities.com/jay_carlsen79/mustang.html These were taken this last Friday. Had the car up in the air to replace the front bumper with a racing apron and also to put an auburn posi rear-end in a new 8" currie housing. I mostly road-race at Willow Springs (Rosamond, CA) but I'm interested in seeing what the new 302 does at the strip. I may share some stories as my car sticks out enough like a sore thumb to attrack the occasional race.

Damn. Nice car, man. I want to hear what you run with the new 302, and throw some Hoosiers on for good measure (and for that traction problem). How do you usually launch?

Welcome aboard buddy. A fast-back.......nice. I've always loved the fast back models.
15.8 huh.....not bad for the 289. Just remember you ran at LACR, 1 of the worst 1/4 mile tracks to run at. Horrible traction problems, weather out here always sux too. But hey buddy, where u located at? Also, when do you think you'll be heading back to LACR? I go atleast once a week and if u ever wanna run some quick 4-bangers, just pm me so we can set something up. Always nice to meet people from the board. |

the_new_guy: Thanks for the compliment. My transmission is actually an automatic C-4 but with a manual pattern valve body. Shifting is done with a B&M ratchet shifter, so I shift each gear as you would a manual... just no clutch and only three gears. I usually launch around 3,000 rpm (limited by the stall convertor). Even launching at 2,500 rpm it breaks traction... so my problem right now is just traction. I built the whole car for road racing though... I went with the manual pattern automatic so I could sorta go middle of the road as far as drag racing and road racing goes. Don't expect to be great at either, but I have fun.
I'd like to go with a jerico transmission someday. But at like... $3,445 it's a tad pricey right now. joebowlr21: Yeah 15.8. I don't think I can blame the tired old 289 for it though... I think it's just major traction issues. And yeah... LACR isn't real great for traction either. Is it me or is the strip a little bumpy? I live in Hesperia, which is like... right next to Victorville, and about 45 minutes from LACR, and an hour and 15 minutes from Willow Springs. Not sure when I'm gonna go to LACR next... I was hoping to get the car dyno'd sometime soon so I can quit telling people "Well... it should be like 330 - 350 hp" 'cause nobody believes me without the hard proof.

Re: Guess I'll introduce myself
Nice Stang. LACR sucks. The people that own it don't seem to care about it. I can't wait to lull Redneck into running there. Seeing is believing. My best time there was a 13.1 sec 1/4 mile in my former 2000 Z28 on a 100 dry shot. Gotta love those 2.3 sec. 60' times
I know that the EVO could hook on that track, but it's density altitude would be too much for it's turbo to compensate for. Most people don't believe in altitude correction factors. It's probably cause they run at a sea level track. Alot of us are going to Fontana Speedway on May 29th. Maybe you can make it there. I plan on smoking Jeff's Sleeper GTP there

Thanks everyone.
Landyacht: Yeah I already did place the 302 in it. Should be producing a lot more horse than my old 289 was. I don't really want to go bigger than a 302 though... I mostly road race and I don't want to throw a lot of extra weight around in the front... and I want higher revs. Old mustangs have a loose rear to begin with. 2000LS1Z28: I ran at the CA motor speedway before... but again had the same awful traction issues. I think my time was 16.5 or something. Smoked the tires half the way down the track. Pitiful...Not sure if I'll make it down to Fontana... but you never know.
