I have code P0401 and a common cause on Taurus's is the DPFE sensors. I looked in my manual and pictures online bit I think these are for the other engine models. I am pretty stumped as to where this thing is located and how hard it is to replace on the engine.
I traced the vacuum lines to behind the intake and jammed in there up against the firewall is a small device about 1"X2" with two skinny tubes and one electrical connector (not the 2"X4" block with 2 thick tubes rising up to it shown in other pictures). If this is the device it looks as if I might need to remove the intake manafold or worse to remove it - is that correct? If so I better see what it will cost for a shop to do it or jsut sell this this monster as woking on it is a real PITA. Thanks, Carl |

Re: DFHE location 96 Taurus LX 24OHVC P0401
In the Ford shop manual it shows the DPFE sensor on the drivers side of the engine beside the PCV valve and mounted to the rear head on a bracket. There is two 8 mm nuts retaining it to the bracket, and there is two rubber hoses attached to it. They come from the EGR tube that goes to the exhaust manifold. You should be able to remove some other parts on the access the DPFE. I have never seen or heard of anyone removing the intake. The sensor is rectangular and is grey, almost tarnished alluminum in color.

Thanks for the advice on locating the part. I have looked in that area but is it very crowded with this 24 valve engine. Perhaps the clue I needed is that it is next to the PCV valve - I will look for a picture of this. I did find a bracket mounted on the back driver side of the intake with two small bolts perpendicular to the ground. Perhaps this is the bracket that the pcv and DPFE sensor are mounted to.
In the mean time I have cleared the code and it hasn't come back back on - keeping my fingers crossed. |

Yes, I recently replaced the DPFE sensor. My problem is also P0401. It is next to the EGR valve. and very simple to replace it. What I needed is a wrench. |
