Question 2002 Ford Explorer Black Coating

The black coating on the panels on either side of our tail-gate and the panels between the doors are peeling. Anyone else having this problem. Ford said we put a damaging chemical on it but we know that's not true.

thats strange ur car is a 2002 , not an old car to start peeling. Do u leave ur car out in the sun too long? try parking in a shade if there is any around ur house.

Re: 2002 Ford Explorer Black Coating

Call Ford's Customer Assistance 800 number and complain to them. They'll probably tell you to bring it to dealer for inspection. Take it to a different one and hopefully they'll be of some assistance. If I understand you correctly the black coating is the glossy black pieces that surrounds the windows on the tailgate and doors and not the pieces that are on the bottom of the doors that doubles for bodyside moldings. You can argue the point if chemicals damaged it how come the paint didn't get damaged. Is it on all sides of the vehicle? Good Luck on this quest.

Re: 2002 Ford Explorer Black Coating

this usually happens to older cars. i have a 94 and its black is chipping. im a painter myself and know paint and it should not be chipping after 2 years. take it to a large dealerships paint department, little ones will weasle out of anything, and tell them it has to be a company flaw, the paint may not have been mixed correctly or the parts may have been contaminated prior to painting.

Re: 2002 Ford Explorer Black Coating

The 91's and up to 2001 were painted as thedreadedpenguin mentioned. They all chipped and grayed. You can paint those yourself, buy some black SEMS Black Semi Gloss Trim paint from an autopainte supplier. Just sand with 400 wet sandpaper, degrease with a paint degreaser from autopaint store, mask and paint. It dries pretty quick.

Blossom, same question from my last posting above.
