Question speed limit

yeah, so my sunfire (a '96 GT if it matters for the question) only goes up to about 107 mph before the gas is cut off.
is there a way to remove this limit?

i've heard about chips on other cars that are supposed to be the thing limiting this, is it the same for this car? or am i totally off?

You either need to reprogram the computer, or have the governor removed. The former of the two is legal, and any performance shop should be able to do it.

The latter of the two is illegal, and only an 'underground' mechanic will do it. The kind of guy that works out of his garage.

sweet. thanks, i'll look into doing it the illegal way, i know some people who might just do it. as for going faster then 107 mph...well my friend's damn civic can get up to 120, my car is faster up till that speed, i don't like that being the thing that makes his car faster then mine cuz...not that we race, but it's the principle of the thing.

Re: speed limit

Umm, I dont know where you got the idea that my car is so fast. I didnt reference my car anywhere in what I said. Besides, right now my car is in the shop, Im dropping a new engine in my car. BTW its an MX3 and when it gets out of the shop, I will gladly race you.

Whether I drive a Geo, or a Viper, Jbodies are still slow. But thanks for coming out

Mx3? Lol!

A 1993 MX 3 V6 listed a 0-60 of 8.5 and a 1/4 of 16.8 with 130hp. I believe that these stats are with a stick.

Woopty do! My stock auto 2000 Sunfire will run 0-60 in 8.7 and does the 1/4 in 16.6 with 150hp. Heck, I have 155 lb ft of torque to boot! The stick shift version will do it in 7.9 and 15.9 respectively. Even a 1993 V6 Cavy Z-24 lists a 0-60 of 8.3 and a 1/4 of 17.3. Only 1/2 a second behind your ugly car.

I know rice boys like to talk their smack. My sis's ex had a 1993 MX 3 and I spanked him hard with my Vette. He upgraded to his dad's 323 and his mommy's 626 and I still owned him. LOL! You're not her ex are you?!?

I remember the last ricer that I spanked owns a 2000 Celica GTS auto. I was able to pull off almost a second faster in the 1/8 and all I got is an intake tube. He has a tube, exhaust, etc. Still owned him. We took his car out for a 0-60 run and it averaged 10.2 on 3 runs. My 'fire with him in it and me with the AC on would do it in 9.1. Guess more horsepower and lighter body weight doesn't always beet more torque and lower gears.

Looks like you were banned back when. Go figure.

Jason

Re: speed limit

my 97 GT cuts out there too, when I bought it i was a little disappointed, but i rarely drive it over 130 these days anyways (kph that is, ie 81 mph). 107mph in a j-body really isn't that bad, as long as you have a good alignment and balanced tires, you're laughin, i'm curious as to how fast a stock 97 sunfire GT can go without any mods, nor a governor.

Re: speed limit

150 or so mph is my "oh my God" limit right now, not stock, but close enough. You really do get tunnel vision at those speeds.
At my current rev limit, I'm topped out at 168mph, with stock sized wheel diameter. the tranny is at max on the ratio at that speed.

And yes, that's a road course speed. I live in a race rich area. I'm 6 hours from Indy, 10 minutes from Norwalk Raceway, 30 from Mid Ohio, and a couple hours from Michigan
