automatic shift

hi,

i just got a brochure from acura about the rsx, it was talking about how the automatic has an option where you can shift gears without the clutch. Is it the same as the stick or something. Faster? Slower?

How is that compared to the stick shift.

Thank you

Re: automatic shift

SportShift is an automatic with a little mode where you can up or down shift just by tapping the shift knob up or down. You don't even have to release the accel to shift. However, it is still slower than a manual. Almost all clutchless systems (ranging from the RSX to the M3) are slower than their manual counterparts (its been timed and tested before) unless they are like the Ferrari or F1 ones.

Re: automatic shift

I would hope that all automatic transmissions come with the "option" of shifting without a clutch...

Yes, it's a little different nowadays on these automatics - who would have thought - an automatic that shifts without a clutch!

Like crazy said, it comes with a SportShift. It allows the driver to up and downshift using a forward and backward tap on the autoshifter. I drove a Mazda3 with this and hated it. If I wanted an automatic with a shifter, I would have just purchased a manual!

I also know someone who has the automatic base RSX and she doesn't like it because when she goes to work there is a stop sign on a major hill and it revs down to first gear, with a big jolt, while accelerating after rolling. It actually decides when to shift for you if you go past a certain rpm as well(probably near redline). She says she wishes she'd had purchased the manual.

I would think it is slower than the manual and I would just save the money and learn to drive a stick. It's much more fun and you have full control of when to shift.

Re: automatic shift

I agree with you mmont0. I drove a Mazda Protege5 with one of those transmissions. I hate it. It's not an instant thing at all. It take a little bit to actually shift when you push or pull the shifter. Not any faster acceleration than in auto mode in my opinion. Plus, RSXs have the option of a 6speed transmission. In my opinion that's a no-brainer. Get the stick.

Re: automatic shift

The Type S is the only one with the option of a 6MT.

And yes, the SS is slower than auto. Also, the Auto RSX has less mods available for it.

Yes, the typeS is only a 6MT, but here in the US the Base RSX is available in 5 speed as well . But you probably knew that.

The "Sequential Shift" in the RSX is slower than the manual on the initial take off. At a rolling start, the RSX SS and the Base RSX are nearly the same. I love the SS in the RSX, I just wish they would have made the Type S with it! Almost every car now has that type of shifting mechanism in the automatics. BMW, Volvo, Mecedes, Infinity, Mazda, Nissan just to name a few. I don't think I would even own a manual trans after having this. The person that said that it shifts down to fist gear going up hill. There is something wrong, mine will only down shift to first when you are at nearly at stand still.

Re: automatic shift

I know there is a 5 speed

And I doubt they'll ever make an auto type s. Many reasons, its slower all around, its an easier daily driver but if you need a dd get the base, its more expensive, and its a major pain when you'll need to get it serviced.

And what do you mean something is wrong? 1st gear is the lowest....

In the Sequential Shift mode, the car shouldn't automatically down shift into 1st gear when or just because you are going up a hill, unless you down shift the trans yourself. That's why I stated something is wrong with the car. However, it will down shift automatically into 1st gear when you are at nearly a standstill, such as slowing down at a stop light. I guess it could go into 1st up hill if you were going slow enough Canuck, do you have a RSX with the SS? Do you hang out on the Club RSX site?
