first thing i would like to say thanks to R1-rider, before i signed up i saw a few of his post and learned more then i knew. So im looking to get a beginner bike, im not looking to ride on the main streets right now. I live in a small town (7 miles long) and not a real lot of traffic, i was thinking of getting the bike and learning on my own, what do you think? like i said its a small town, i wont be going over 45mph and i kno not to take the bike for granted, im not stupid. Also i would need to learn the gears and shit. what sucks is i would be financing a bike so it would be new and not old. (i dont have money to buy an old bike thats why im financing) thanks guys let me kno

Are you planning on putting a down payment on the bike? If you are, that may be enough money already to buy yourself an older used bike. With as small of a town that you live in, it will be much harder for you to get yourself into trouble as in a city. I would suggest looking something aroung the 500cc range, along the lines of like the nighthawk or 500ninja, these bikes are the most forgiving, and why they are the most common bikes you will see at a motorcycle safety course. Unfortunately you are probably not going to have any MSF courses close to you, and although I hate to say it, you will not need the class as much as a person learning to ride in a city, a small town or open country is a much more gentle environment to learn in. In the long run it still will probably be beneficial for you to take the class, even after you have a very good feel for the bike, because it can help you become better suited for real to life dangers you face very often in town.

I think your best bet would be to find a used older bike still in good condition in the classifieds at the nearest big city, and try to get a really good price for it. After you are done learning to ride on the bike, you can always just sell it again and have virtually no out of pocket cost for it. Plus if you drop it or it gets damaged somehow, it is much cheaper to repair than a brand new bike.

If you have any friends or family that knows how to ride a motorcycle, ask them if they could help you go through the process of not only riding the bike, but choosing one that is good for you to start on. Experience counts for so very much on motorcycles, its very wise to listen to those who have already been there.

Good luck with getting a bike, and if you have any more questions please feel free to ask.
