Automotive metalic paint question

I want to use "Quicksilver", a stock Toyata color, on my Supra model. I read in a few places that paints with metal flakes that are meant for 1:1 cars look bad on models. I'm not sure if this paint has flakes and what scale they are. I'd really hate to go through the process of painting the car just to have it come out looking cheesy and cheap. Has anyone used a metalic automotive paint before, or have an idea if it will look ok. I've included a picture of a 1:1 Quicksilver Supra, which can hopefully give you a better idea of the paints appearance and help you answer my question. If you need more/different images, let me know, and I can find some for you. Thanks for any help, it is MUCH apreciated.

it all depend of the brand of Paint. I use Sunset Leman from Nissan (I asked a store to mix it) and the flake was perfect.

take a look (clear coat is separate, else the paint is too harmfull for pladtic, ask the store if they can make that)

as for you color, tamiya TS-17 would be a real close match or Silver Leaf (ts-30) with a clear coat

Re: Automotive metalic paint question

that color is almost like a metalic burnt grey silverish. i have a color similar to that, mine is a bit darker but if you are airbrushing i could add more light color to it. http://www.supermod04.netfirms.com/c.../elcamino.html here are pics, it would be easy to lighten the color

it's a little darker then that but you got the idea.if your doing the taimya supra it already comes molded in quicksilver so its gonna be kinda hard to paint that over its self.quicksilver is a very hard color to find and make look right on models, ive tryed lots of times and either couldnt find it or it didnt come out right.sorry to bring the bad news.

Re: Automotive metalic paint question

I'm definately going for that exact color, and I'm having it mixed at a auto paint store. I plan on doing separate clear coat too. That Nissan paint looks great, I hope mine comes out like that. A guy can dream, can't he. I can't really get away with any color other than that, the girl I'm building it for knows her Supra colors, so I guess I'll just go for it and hope. The color doesn't seem like it has big flakes anyway, it seems fairly smooth as far as that goes.

Edit: As far as painting over the silver it was molded in, I'm going to primer it in gray, then white, like Alex Kustov does in his tutorial page. I hope that will prevent the color it was molded in from being an issue at all.

Re: Automotive metalic paint question

SupaMan89T, I do remember now that you said in a thread that you were starting a Supra. What color are you doing? Any custom or special things? I'm looking forward to seeing how yours comes out, and I'll keep everyone posted on mine as soon as I get started. Still need to order a new airbrush, regulator, and moisture trap, and get supplies, but I'm stuck on my Navy base with no car. Do you have a MkIII by any chance (just guessing because of the name)? The girl I'm building the Sup for has a 90 turbo.
