Trouble Programming Remote...Not a Repeat!

I have a 98 GP GT and am having trouble programming the keyless entry remote. Everything is going fine until i get to the step where you turn the ignition off, then back to ACC., When i turn it back to ACC. its starts chiming in a strange pattern... Chime...Chime,chime....Chime,chime,chime...chime,c hime,chime,chime. Then it repeats this a few times. In the instructions it says that it is supposed to chime once, and then you can hold down the buttons on the remote! I've tried holding them down during the strange chiming, but it doesn't work. I am following the directions exactly, can anyone tell me what is going on, and how to get it to work? Thank you!

From what I understand the bizzare chimes, which I also have, are an indication that there is something wrong with the system. Of course, the only way to find out what is wrong is to have it hooked up.
