Kyeless entry on 1996 Explorer

I have a 1996 Ford Explorer XLT 5 liter. The key fob was thought to be dead and so we put a new battery in it. Then when we went to try it with the new batteries it still wouldn't work. Then we checked the keyless door entry to find that that is also not working. I have tried the 5/8 times in 20 seconds but the locks do not cyle and therefore I cannot recode the remote. The key does not light up when touched so I assume the problem is deeper possibly a fuse or relay of some sort. I am not sure where the fuse or relay is that controls this operation. The Haynes book is a piece of krap that I have and I have no owners manual. Someone has metioned something to me about a GEM module or something which I found at the left rear jack compartment and I now have the original code but no power no keyless entry and for some reason the master key works the ignition and passenger door but not the drivers. I am lost any help would be greatly appreciated please email me with some direction. [email protected]
Thanks
Jeff
