New paint job

I just bought a 98 eclipse and i want to change the color. I would really like to paint it myself but i have no idea where to start. Anyone have any suggestions or know what kind of price range im looking at to do it myself? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanx

Re: New paint job

If you've never painted a car or anything on a car besides touch up, then i wouldn't suggest doing it yourself. It would probably be cheaper and less stressful to have someone else paint it in the long run.

well, my friend has an old p.o.s. sentra that he said i can experiment on and i have access to the tools that i would need. I actually have 3 cars that all need to be painted plus the one "test car" so i thought it would be cheaper this way.

Re: New paint job

Well, then... good luck. My suggestion, dismantle each part your going to paint, and paint it separated, than reinstall each part when all the parts dry. My recommendation is still to take it to someone else, but more power to you if you do it.

Re: New paint job

Painting isn't something you can just do. especially not a car. if you know someone who has everything you need... paint, spray gun, pressure barrel, compressor, paint temp setter and a paint booth. along with like 10 other things like wetsanders and buffers and so on, then by all means, try it. but be prepared to f**k it up. the first thing I painted was a hemtt (big ass military tanker truck) so it didn't matter cause the military doesn't care. since then I've painted many other things, and have gotten better. I still wouldn't paint my car though. I have painted a few kits. and they turned out just dandy, but there's a big difference between painting parts, and painting cars. It will cost you about 2500 dollars to get the color of your car changed. because they have to do all the jams and remove the engine and lots of other things. soooo, you can try it yourself if you feel confident, or, you can take it to someone. oooorrrr, leave it the same color and save yourself 1200 bucks and get it repainted. Good luck either way.

Re: New paint job

or you could pull the engine and everything yourself then tow it somewhere to get painted if they'll do it that way it might be cheaper

a good way to get a cheaper paint job is to do all the prep work for it and then take it to the paint shop.

Re: New paint job

a little thread jack here. i am sure many of you get this too. every since i got my kit on people's been using my bumpers to park. that being said, you all know what happens after that. i get scars. would you guys recommand picking up some nickpaint from autozone or take it to the paint shop. if so, would it be much work for them to fix those scars? expensive?

Re: New paint job

you mean you have curb rash underneath the kit? or it chipped out from bumping into the curb? if its on the underside, and hasn't scarred any of the glass, you can just get a paint marker (touch up pen) and do it... if it really bothers you all that much. it all depends on how bad it is. if it scars the glass, or chips. eventually you're gonna have to get it patched, sanded, and repainted. or it'll start lookin pretty rough and have a weak spot that coult fracture due to temp changes. Not sure exactly where or how bad they are though. so I'd say just go with a touch up marker and life will go on.

BTW, car looks really clean in that pic. long live black and white photo's
