Oil Filter Relocation
What are the drawbacks of relocating your oil filter? Do you require more oil going through your system? Any special considerations in location? Any other horror stories?
I was thinking about doing this since it's relatively cheap, and it's a pain in the ass to clean up the spilled oil from changing it.

Re: Oil Filter Relocation
Can't help you out with that, but just get a drain bucket underneath the spill area and get a little dirty. It won't hurt you.. it may even make you feel more like a man.

the only thing that gets oil on it during oil changes is the middle of the drivers side axle and some oil leaks along the oil pan.

Re: Oil Filter Relocation
I get a little dirty all the time, and so does my lower exhaust manifold piping. It's a pain in the ass snaking my hand up through the motor just to get to a filter, and it's also a pain in the ass trying to keep everything clean when I have to spill oil on it every 3000 miles.
Again, I'd really like to know if there are any drawbacks. I haven't heard many people discuss this, so I don't think there is, but I'm just making sure.

Re: Oil Filter Relocation
yeah i just did an oil change yesterday on my teg... i don't know if it's because of their small hands or maneuverable limbs... but those japanese must have been drunk when they designed the place for the oil filter! i can't even fit a filter wrench up there.. it's rediculous!!!

Re: Oil Filter Relocation
Why do you need a filter wrench? You really don't have to tighten them down so hard.. Just rub a little oil around the rubber seal on it and hand tighten it. Mine comes off with a tad bit of force.

Re: Oil Filter Relocation
yeah that's what i had to do.. it's not that big of a deal.. it's just way easier to use a wrench

Re: Oil Filter Relocation
Well if a wrench is too much of a hassle you could always pound a phillips head or something sharp through the filter and use that to twist it. It's messy and a last resort though.

Re: Oil Filter Relocation
You people who change your oil in your driveay but for people like me whos job is to change people's oil and have either lifts or oil change pits, love the location of the honda filters. When the car is above you it's really easy to get to the filter.

Re: Oil Filter Relocation
i always go under the car when i change my oil... even still trying to snake your hand up past all the crap in the way is a pain... oil gets all over my axel, lower downpipe, and some other place i can't remember.. it's a pain to wipe off when the car is 2" above your face.. going at the filter from the top on my car would be next to impossible
