Jerky shifting, gear noise
I drive a 2001 Impala and have an intermittent problem with jerky shifting and loud gear noise. After some everyday stop & go driving, the shifts progressively get worse until they feel like tapping the brakes (hard). Gear noise then becomes audible, especially above 40 mph. The engine also drinks fuel like there's no tomorrow. This is a 79,000 mile vehicle and nothing on it has been altered or allowed to run without proper maintenance. Is this the sign of something that can easily be fixed (i.e. blocked tranny vents) or the prelude to a breakdown?

Re: Jerky shifting, gear noise
I had the exact symptoms with my 2000 Impala. Had the Pressure Control Solenoid replaced at Chevy dealer. Total cost was $600. Took care of the problems so far.
