Stripping bronze coating?

Hi, I have a set of wheels that are coated bronze out of box. I can't seem to get rid of the coating. I have tried CSC & bleach. They dont react with the coating at all. Any tips?

Re: Stripping bronze coating?

Are you sure the rims are coated and that the plastic itself that the rims are made from is not coloured?

Yeah, It sounds like the rims are made out of bronze colored plastic. U better be careful not to ruin the rims.

Re: Stripping bronze coating?

if you want to paint them, take a piece of 1000 grit and just wet sand the top clear coat off then paint them

Re: Stripping bronze coating?

I sanded a small area off and it is white plastic underneath. I will probably try just sending the whole wheel.

What kind of bleach did you use?

I use Colorex which worked pretty well for chrome plated parts.

Re: Stripping bronze coating?

I see. Very interesting, but I'm afraid I don't have any suggestions. So perhaps sanding is your best option. Good luck. What are you working on?

It is a set of racing-spec BBS wheels. I am working on '97 Porsche GT-1. I should probably create a progress thread when I actually get something to show

Re: Stripping bronze coating?

I had similar trouble getting the gold/bronze paint off a set of Fujimi Work Emotions. Eventually, about half rubbed off after soaking in CSC, and I'll have to sand off the rest before repainting.

I will probably try soaking in CSC again. The area between the spokes are very hard to reach with sand paper.

Re: Stripping bronze coating?

Indeed. I haven't decided yet how to proceed with mine. If you find a solution, please share.
