trucks can be quick too

Aiight here's why. My buddie has a 01' Silverado 2 door, 5.3L, 2wd. The thing isnt slow........at all. He's a cocky little shit, and well i competitive by nature. SOOO......we're in auto class talking about cars and he brings up that he's truck can beat my 5.0. Well seeing that my car runs a little shitty currently, i said no. Well the little bastard kept on about it, saying "Your cars slow as hell if it cant hang with a truck". So i took out my wallet and told him to put $10 on it. So 3:20 comes and we head out of school and to 316 (a two lane highway stretch). I pull out on to the highway when no cars are coming and he does the same, he catches up with me and his passenger does a 1-2-3 count. Well on 3 i pushed in the clutch tryed to switch to second gear and the damn thing didnt want to go in. So he takes off and i'm sitting trying to get the bitch in second, so i give up. We pull into a gas station and when i'm about to hand him the money i take it back and say "double or nothin" (i knew he'd say yes). So we pull BACK on to 316 and i go from a 2nd gear roll this time (damn i'm a fast learner) anywho were goin about 30mph and his passenger does a 1-2-3 count again. Well this time i get a slight jump on him and we sit my door is at his front bumper until about 4,500rpms then i gradually start to pull on him til i hit 3rd. Then he starts to pull a little on me until i got back up to 4,500. So i shift at 5,300rpms and i come out of third doing around 98mph. His truck cuts off at 98mph so i think i did pretty good there. Anyway i ended up my rear bumper to his front bumper and that's it. Not a bad fight for a 4,600lb truck. He took it to commerce and run 14.80's once. If his truck didnt cut off at 98 i think he would have won because he seemed to pull hard on me in my lower rpms.
And that's my NOT SO impressive kill for the week.

Hah... funny man.

Had my own experience two weeks ago with a truck. Was stopped at a light next to a guy who always rides my ass in traffic... anyway it's a Lightning and the guy thinks he's real cool. Instead of ramping up I decide I'll just play it easy and stab the gas when the light turns... so I end up stalling it (accelerator pump was not set right). Talk about embarassing... he was smiling at me real big at the next light...

Well the following day I blew his doors off like I should have the day prior... but I'll never live down the stall. :\

I was not aware that Chevy made a 5.3 litre V8 engine in these style trucks...i thought they were 5.8?

Dodge = 5.7L
Ford = 5.4L
Chevy = 5.8L

Maybe i'm wrong. Oh well, nice run of it! That's the only problem with the 1/2 tonne trucks when it comes to races like that. If the governors weren't so restricted, they'd be great to race with. They're fast trucks, but the top end is limited.

the 350 is a chevrolet engine, and is 5.7litres.

You said chevy made the 5.8... it's 5.7 not 5.8.

The Corvette Engine, the SS engine, the Trans Am Engine, and the new Pontiac GTO Engine all use the 350 5.7litre v8 platform. You can also find these in the silverado's and are often used in drag races... you know... that 350.

Actually as wierd as it seems, As of late chevy has been making a few different engines. They have a 4.8L V8 whish equated to a 294, a 5.3L which is a 327, and I think they stopped making the 5.7 liter engines for trucks in like 00-01. Dont quote me on that, but im pretty sure its true.

Re: trucks can be quick too

Yep I haven't seen the 5.7 in a truck for awhile its 5300's and 4800's or something of that sort real odd stuff. Guess they make more power.. course the 5.7's were around in 93 and what not, newer technology.

Re: trucks can be quick too

The 1500 series Silverados have the option for the 4.3l V6 or the 5.3l V8, its around 280 hp or a bit more if its the new style front end trucks. The 2500 series I think start with the 5.3l V8 but you have the option of the 6.0L V8. I'm not really sure if the 1500 can get the 6.0L but I know the SS comes with it, and that's basically a 1500 series.

Good race thats interesting though I've raced a Silverado(5.3L) with the Firebird but it was extended cab and 4wd. I was able to put a couple car lengths on it in the few seconds we raced. Haven't tried a 2-door 2wd version though. I imagine that was tough they have quite a bit more power and torque then our antiquated L98's and 5.0's.

Don't forget about the 8.1L in the HD Silverado's. My dad has a 3/4 ton 4wd, with the 8.1 and Allison auto. Thing is very quick through the 1st 3 gears, 4th and 5th slow it down a bit. Only bad thing is that it gets 9mpg, but thats whether you are towing a trailer or not. Pulls our 24ft enclosed race trailer with car 95mph no problems. 2nd, what does your friend have done to that 5.3L. I have a 99 Sonoma, 4.3, 2wd, and I smoked my buddies 99 Sierra with a 5.3.

Most important, check this vid out, it's posted in videos under cars in general.

Actually i said i thought chevy made a 5.8...guess not!! I'm familiar with their small block 350, just wasn't aware that is was this 5.7 you refered too. If that makes sense.

In any event, thanks for the clarification!
