My friend just bought a 89 camaro iroc z and its in excelent condition it was a show car before he bought it it has a 350 in it and when he got it a few days ago he was expecting it to take off and spin out when he would put the pedal to the metal but it hardly goes fast at all. it sounds great but it doesnt go very fast? it tends to over heat also if that helps. i mean these things are supposed to go pretty fast and it doesnt even squeel the tires AT ALL when he floors it off the start. if anyone has any ideas on what could be the problem i would a preciate it alot thanks.

Re: 89 Camaro IROC Z not accelerating fast?
Sounds like your catyletic converter is clogged.

Re: 89 Camaro IROC Z not accelerating fast?
Maybe a dirty fuel filter could be slowing it down??
Is the 8th digit of his VIN number 8?? |

Re: 89 Camaro IROC Z not accelerating fast?
could also be a bad torque converter. excess slippage would loose power, slowing acceleration, and the increased slippage would cause higher rpm operation, leading to over heating. where are the rpms when its accelerating??? way up high, or down low? clogged converters usually keep the rpms down low, a slipping converter would put the rpms up high, both would give you the above mentioned problems.

Re: 89 Camaro IROC Z not accelerating fast?
It may have a bad gear ratio like 2.56 or 3.08 that would make the car take off slow. has the car been driven a lot when it was running hot? maybe he did some damage to the engine.

Re: 89 Camaro IROC Z not accelerating fast?
Unless the car isnt stock the gear ratio shouldnt be any worse than 2.77.

Re: 89 Camaro IROC Z not accelerating fast?
gear ratio shouldnt matter a whole lot in this case they arent breakin loose at all and im running the stock 2.73s on my 305 and i can rip up the tires..id look at the tranny, maybe it needs some fluid? hope you didnt overheat it or it could be shot, i also agree with checking the filters...TC etc.
