Re: Black Oil

If the oil is black that means that it is doing it's job. It is picking up the deposites in the engine and suspending them instead of having them create gummy build up. If your concerned, the safest way to try to clean the engine and get the oil not so dark is to change it sooner. Do a change at 2500kms then in another 2500kms. Then your regular 5000 kms. It's up to you if you want to try an engine flush additive. Some are hard on bearing material and gaskets.

Thanks very much "irish30" This Taurus has been driving me "nutty" for some time. I have had to do all kinds of major repairs! The latest was new strut mounts, struts and coils in the rear.

Re: Black Oil

Suspension parts are one thing that people forget about, but nothing lasts forever. The best car I have owned is my 98 taurus. This car owes me nothing. I guess it wasn't built on a friday.

Re: Black Oil

93rgeal,
If the oil gets dirty quickly likely the engine is dirty inside. You the original owner to know how regular the oil was changed? Likely someplace along the way someone "extended" the length between changes. Irish30 gave a good remedy. I have a family member who has not changed oil in her Saturn in 5 years, the next owner is going to have the same questions you have.

I always buy used cars.

Put synthetic oil in it and then see how dirty it gets.

Run it a couple of thousand and replace the filter and top off oil. After a while the oil will run longer before getting dirty.
