'97 Engine Surges

My 97 Metro will surge as though I'm revving the engine when idling, and even during driving when holding steady on the accelerator... Then, while driving, enging will begin to idle and car will slow down even though I'm pushing the accelerator, until eventually it slows down enough to die... Just replaced the fuel filter, and still experiencing the same problem... Please Help!!!

If it's dying, you might have a bad TPS(Throttle postition sensor) This will also cause the car to surge at idle. If the sensor is bad, it will only inject enough fuel for idle, because the ECU does not know you are pressing down on the gas. I would have it put on a scope. That'll tell you exactly what sensor is puked.

my 97 was doing the same thing, unplug the (idle control switch ?) it,s located below and behind the right hand side of air cleaner, looking at it with the hood open, be sure to unplug it when the rpm's aren't surging high. unplugged mine about 2000 miles ago runs great, though not sure how it's going to react in winter. by the way, found new switch @auto-zone $169? didn't buy it. good luck! let us know how you make out

Turns out, I had a bad fuel pressure regulator, which is not availiable separately... Had to buy a complete throttle body... Found one at a junkyard for $125, so it's back in action...

how did you find out it was fuel pressure regulator? i still can't solve my surging....it does it when i am accelerating and let off throttle, then picking throttle back up. if i just accelerate normal up to speed limit and rest foot on pedal it's fine. only when i let off and then also when i pick it back up. any ideas? idles okay and does it at any tempereature.
