Mechanic Question

I was driving my 92 240SX done the interstate and it just quit. It will crank but will not run. Have checked fuel pump, it's good. Seems to be firing, but will not run. Any ideas as to what could be the problem? Basically use it to drive back to work, so I don't want to spend too much on the fix.

Re: Mechanic Question

there is gas in the car right? Also have you tried jump starting it? It might be many things but I would try the simple ones first. Check your gas, jump start it, etc.

Re: Mechanic Question

Didn't give enough info.
In saying it cranks, do you mean, the starter turns the engine but wont start the car or do you mean the car starts but will not move????????
If the engine turns, then you fuel filter or injector could be blocked. Boot leg way of testing it,
-unplug the hose right after the filter and turn the key to semi on, if no fuel, then there is you problem.
-if not, unplug the return line after the injectors (be careful of fire risk so put a thick towel), see if fuel is running.
If there is spark, and the car starts but will not move, you clutch or TQ conv could be messed up, depending on Manual or AUTO.
But thats all I can come up with with the little info you left for now.

It is probably something simple like a sensor disconnected itself or what have you. KAs are known for their dead solid reliablity so the chance that some major went wrong is very remote.

Check the entire engine bay very carefully for anything loose or unplugged. Failing in that, since the engine cranks and seems to be firing, the fuel delievery as said before is suspect. Just keep tracing it back from working systems until you find the problem.

Ahhahahah are you kidding? Anyone who has owned a 240 knows how unreliable they are. If you never have it break on you, you're extremely unlucky...it's part of the experience of owning that car.

I've owned my 89 Fastback for a couple years now, been driving it back and forth to work about 20 miles both ways every day for a while...and been beating the crap out of it on the weekend fairly often, and I've never had any problems that were more then normal wear and tear. KA is a solid motor, maybe the DE less so but at hard 195K on the odo with the original engine, I can't bring myself to complain.

Re: Mechanic Question

By the way, if your TPS sensor is gone, your car will start, but the ECU will not be able to match the correct air fuel mix with no feedback from the TPS, this will in turn make it shut off the car.
I just cut a whole in one of my clients exhaust and also my J30 right before the cat cuz they wouldn't stay on, the cat was stuffed up. It could be a million diff reasons, got to be more precise with the discription.

check your ignition system, this sounds like what it is.

sometimes u can just be driving down the road and all the sudden it quits and won't start again, that is usually an ignition problem.

I would replace all the ignition parts before messing with anything else, its a good thing to do anyhow.

Re: Mechanic Question

he said he has spark, that would rule out ignition, but check anyway.

Re: Mechanic Question

I dont know bout the 240s but my Eclipse did something similar and they said it was my auto shut off-relay thing, near the windshield side of the engine bay. Didnt fix it but a new computer in 'er did! Junkyard...wootwoot

Should have been more specific. Should have said it will turn over fine(crank), but will not start(run). Plenty of gas, unhooked the fuel system and it primes just fine. Checked and it seemed to be firing just fine. Have gone over the engine thouroughly and found nothing that was disconnected. Am going to start more troubleshooting this weekend and will check everything again. Thanks for the help.

Re: Mechanic Question

thats a tough one, all the usual culprits are working fine. Unplug one injector see if it is squirting anything. By the way, just because you can see fuel doesn't mean it is in pristine condition, the volume may not be enough, on the spark if you can see a spark at the plug that usualy works, don't hold the plug or plug wire with your bare hands, use some insulated thongs. Trust me 10-40 thousand volts will not kill you cuz the amps are weak, but it stings like shit. Double check on your intake, your TPS sensor and MAF sensor.
