Oil on Spark Plugs
Well I was having trouble with the engine missing in low RPM's so I went to give it a tune up and when I replaced the spark plugs I had oil all over them, on the threads and on the electrode. Since I put the new plugs in yesterday I haven't had the problem but I'm sure it will come back once oil gets a chance to get in there again.
Does anyone know where this oil is coming from and what I can do to stop it? I have a 93 accord LX with 197k miles on it. I did a search and it looks like it could be the valve cover gasket which I am planning on replacing but I bet it could be something else as well. Please let me know what you think and thanks in advance. |

Its not the valve cover gasket, but the spark plug sealing ring things that should come with the valve gasket. This is a typical problem but that should fix it for ya

Re: Oil on Spark Plugs
if you replace the valve cover gasket replace all of them inside the valve cover also, I did the same thing like a month ago went to the dealer and had them do it for me

Re: Oil on Spark Plugs
thewoahna's right, when I replaced my valve cover gasket the only spark plug with oil on it was the one that had a deteriorating spark plug ring. You should check you're valve gaps while you're replacing the gaskets too.

Re: Re: Oil on Spark Plugs
There are actually 2 spark plug tube seal on each, 8 total. Normally the upper in valve cover are only replaced, but if there is still oil the rocker assy. must be removed in order to replace those.
I agree, it's a very good idea to check/adjust valve gaps. Honda 4cylinders do require valve adjustments every 30K |

yeah dude, when they sell you the valve cover gasket only someone in a good mood is gonna ask you if you want the others to go with it, being the little spark plug tube gaskets. on a car with over 150k they must be all cracked and messed up. but thats definately what it is. when you take the plug wires out check and make sure that the tubes that you put the plug in aren't pushed out to the side, and as centered as possible

ps. yeah do your velves too while you're in there. can be a pain in the butt if you are doing it yourself but makes the car run great again if you do it right.
