well it depends on the year a bit, whether you or the other guy had a quattro or not, and if you had any mods to yours as well...overall id say, depending on the driver of course, the stock 2.8 over the stock 1.8T especially if theyre 98-01...and it could be argued for a 96-97 2.8 as well...but thats just my oppinion

Re: which is faster?

The V6 is quicker off the line, but I still don't know how you beat him unless his was auto, because the auto tranny's in Audis are very smooth and slow, so the manual probably won it for you.

Re: which is faster?

i dont know how the hell he beats a 6 cylinder with that 1.8t. that engine(1.8t) is the kind you put on cabs in europe, no performance at all.
i think Vw uses the same engine on cheaper cars in europe like SEAT, SKODA and others.

thats some pretty good insight...i bet if you took some noz and a turbo, along with a new intake and exhaust and put it on a 2.8 it would take a 1.8T...well according to the numbers you dont need to do that...here how you beat a 1.8T...take one stock 1.8T and one stock 2.8...line them up...make sure both drivers know they are racing...tell them to go...and if they each rev and shift correctly the 2.8 wins...without the turbo...but it is a good point

I dont know if a 2.8 could take a 1.8 off the line only the engins will be working so the 2.8 would have it off the line but as soon as the 1.8t' turbo kick in i dont think the the 2.8 would be able to take it much longer with out mods. So over all on a uarter mile i think the 1.8t would win becuse of the turbo and that is all the reason why it would wim. Not only that how long can a 4 cylinder last. I dont like the idea of a small 4 cylinder having a turbo doesnt sould like it will last to long.

Re: which is faster?

The 2.8 is faster I would think and has more potential because it has more displacement, but the 1.8T is a very good motor too and has won many awards. So dont underestimate it. With just a ECU chip the 1.8T will make over 200hp and kill a stock 2.8. Then get a boost controller and up the boost on the turbo and the hp numbers are endless. I think you can make over 250hp on the stock turbo. Much more then that though and you with need to get a bigger turbo.
