'98 Passat spark plugs

I am a new VW owner and am completely blown away by how different this engine is. (I am used to Japanese, not German). Anyway, I am such a dunce I can't even find my spark plugs. Please help the little blonde girl out! Still saving for a good fix-it book as they run a pretty penny. The owners manual is no help (go figure) says "take it to a dealer" RIGHT!!! Not where I come from. Thanks!

Re: '98 Passat spark plugs

The spark plugs are under the individual coil packs. On engine code AWD you only have to remove the bolts & pull them out. AWW and AWP codes officially require VW tool number T10094 or T40039 to remove the coils. However I've read that you should be able to pull them straight up if you are careful & move any obstacles to them coming straight up. Be careful if you try this.

Awesome, boschmann, when you say engine codes I have no clue. I am trying to pick as many brains as possible to learn this thing. Thank you!

Re: '98 Passat spark plugs

I was thinking the wrong vehicle, your engine code is AEB, its on a sticker on the engine. I don't believe those coils are bolted on. Anyway, the plugs are under them.

Re: '98 Passat spark plugs

Cool, I was wondering about the code. I got to the plugs. They were disgusting. All black. "running rich" was the response I got from a fellow VW enthusiast. Under the coils. Found um with no problem with and experienced pro next to me. Thank you for your feedback!
