Tires: P-rated or LT-rated?

So it seems that OEMs these days are habitually putting passenger tires on their SUVs rather than Light Truck tires. Has anyone considered switching to an LT tire when buying replacement rubber? I am looking to replace my tires and am thinking of going with a 6-ply LT tire for my purposes, mostly asphalt with occasional off-road and/or towing. Ride comfort and noise are large concerns, but so is an aggressive tread. If you have an opinion or comment regarding your experiences with either P or LT tires, let's hear it!

I run P rated on mine, but then I don't do any off-roading.

My 2nd and 3rd sets have been LT tires; however, I also travel a lot in the summer, most of that with being in the mountains traversing over rocks, though I wouldn't call it "off-roading", and the other portion of the summer is pulling a boat.

Personally, I had to compromise a little, I'm partial to wanting a smooth ride, however, I also wanted the safety of a stiffer sidewall - as I would rather not be having to change a 16" tire or worse, be stranded with 2 flats/blowouts.

However, if quality of ride is a major factor for you, and you like the way it rides now with P-rated. Then that may be your answer. However a 6-ply or C rated tire, in say the Bridgestone Dueler Revo's (my current set), does not produce a harsh ride. A stiffer ride, yes, but not harsh.

My last set of tires, were of the Goodyear Wrangler RT/S 6-ply; not harsh either, however one of the worst brands produced yet! Do NOT get them

I can't speak for other kinds of tires in the 6-ply as to their roughness.

But, honestly, if you're only pulling weight 2-3 times a year and only traverse over rocks a few times a summer; I don't know if you "need" a 6-ply tire.
