water pump on 2.2 Achieva

as title states, i need to change a waterpump on one of these guys. i've never worked on a 2.2 before. what is involved? do they have a serp. belt? do i need to remove anything else, like a timing belt, to get to the pump? TIA.

PITA. Get a Hayens/Chiltons manual.

actually, i took a look at the car today and its a quad 4, not a 2.2. im not going to mess with it since its all tied into the timing chains, etc.

Re: water pump on 2.2 Achieva

I assumed you meant a Quad 4. You do *not* have to mess with the front cover, timing chains, etc.

It IS a lot of work. It's will take a lot of time. The cost of the pump isn't bad.

But, you must drop the exhaust, *remove the exhaust manifold*, remove the bottom coolant pipe, etc. It's a LOT of "busy" work and a lot is done mostly from under the car. The is a VERY good chance that you would need heat to get the exhaust bolts off. I like MAPP and a a hose handle instead the propane "on top" torches.

BTW: GET A GM FACTORY MANUAL ON EBAY for your car!! For Olds, they often go for UNDER $20 WITH S&H. They often go for under $15 and media S&H is cheap. There are a few now with a starting price of $5. Some times, the auctions end without even getting a bod for that.

Like I said, I wouldn't pay over $15 for one. They come up ALL the time.

Re: water pump on 2.2 Achieva

See the ebay links for the GM manuals. They are GM Factory Service manuals. Helm also sells them.

It's mostly a *very time* consuming job (3-8 hrs, depending on experience). Plus, a lot to do under the car, and *hoping* that all of the exhaust bolts come off without problems.
