Ok, there is a rattle coming from the timing chain area when I start the car and at idle. The rattle is louder when I start the car. I thought that it may be the fan, but I have been told that it may be the timing chain. I have been to 240sx.org and they talk about a timing chain rattle when starting the engine, but they only talk about it happening with the SOHC. Mine rattles alot when I start it and it continues to rattle at idle. The rattle doesn't get louder as I increase the engine speed. Any suggestions?

My friends 240 we just bought had that rattle and it was the timing chain. Im still working on it right now it is a bitch to even get to. It wasnt the chain it was the guides which broke on it. For that 240 when i opened the cover one of the chains was loose. maybe check that or just go to a dealer or shop and ask for an opinion.

Re: timing chain rattle - 93 SE (DOHC)
Take your valve cover off and see if the guard at the top has already been removed. If not then remove it. That is the actual procedure the dealer uses scenes how this part wasn't necessary. if that doesnt help then the tensioners are probably bad.
