Was wondering if anyone has experienced very bad gas mileage with their elantras? My 2002 is getting under 20 mpg city...I know its rated for better than that. It seems to run fine except for the mpg's. Any help out there??

Re: 2002 elantra bad gas mileage...help!
I just bought a used 2002 Elantra, and I'm also getting about 19.6 mpg in the city. I may take it into the dealer and ask them if there might be a bad sensor or something. However, the EPA city rating is 24, and it's not unusual for those numbers to be quite optimistic. On the other hand, in highway driving I exceeded the EPA estimate of 33 by a few mpg's. -- Dave

Good guess. The check-engine light actually did come on (after my previous post), so I took it in to the dealer this past Thursday. They replaced the catalytic converter and various O2 sensors, so I'm eager to see if my mileage will improve now.
Thanks. -- Dave |

Re: 2002 elantra bad gas mileage...help!
MY 2002 ELANTRA WAS GOOD ON GAS,UNTIL THE DEALER REPROGRAMED THE TRANSMISSION.NOW IT ACTS LIKE A 5 SPEED.[THE TORQUE CONVERTER ACTS LIKE 5th.GEAR.]NOW IT UPSHIFTS AT A HIGHER SPEED AND DOWN SHIFTS WITH VERY LITTLE PEDAL MOVEMENT. THE DEALER SAID THAT THEY DO NOT KNOW HOW TO PUT THE ORIGINAL PROGRAMING BACK IN....????
