Talking Flasher/Signal Problem...

I was hoping someone could help me out... I got my 1989 Trooper (2.6L) inspected today. It passed, but when I got back into the vehicle, the right turn signal inside the car was stuck in a constant "on" state (i.e. not flashing). I looked outside the vehicle and found that the right front and right rear turn signals were also stuck in a constant on position. I fooled around and noticed the following:

1) The left flasher worked properly, but the right would stay on constantly also.

2) When hazard lights were turned on, all 4 directional lights turned on and remained on without flashing

3) The lights stay ON when the car is off and the key is removed from the ignition.

4) I pulled out various fuses (10A/15A only) any could not turn off the right lights. I also took apart the hazard switch to look for a short, but that did not do anything. I wound up having to disconnect the battery to break the circuit.

What do you think happened? I didn't watch the whole inspection-- could I have blown my flasher relay if they turned it on and it hasn't been used in a while? Is there only one relay for the directional and hazards?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Frank

Re: Flasher/Signal Problem...

hey,
i have the same problem with my '94. My problem was the whole switch itself. I really don't remeber what the problem was, but i'm pretty sure that the switch is the problem. Does it also make a noise when you try signalling with it? When i try signalling right it makes a buzzing noise and the turn signal stays constant. So take of the switch and see what's wrong with it.

Thanks for the reply...

I fooled around this weekend with both the hazard switch in the steering column and the flasher relay underneath the dash. I think the problem is with the relay, but i'm still not sure so I ordered one from Isuzu. The relay does click on and off when turning left, but when putting on the right blinker, it clicks once and seems to stick on.

I hope this solves the problem as the relay was special ordered from Isuzu for $60.
