HELP!!, unknown squeaky noise!
I need some help guys, I have a 2001 Chevy 2500HD. It is making this squeking noise coming from the middle of the truck. Had some buddies look at it and they all agree it comes from the middle of the truck, but it only does it when speed is under 30 MPH. I have checked the u-joints and carrier bearing, all is good, ya know no slipping, freeplay or damage of anykind. It kind of sounds like a brake is staying engaged, but I have ruled that out do to some good troubleshooting. Has anyone had this problem before? Thank you guys.

Do think the noise is drive-train related? Is it a steady squeak or intermittent? Have you tried putting the transmission into neutral when you hear the noise to see if it goes away?

check you park brake cable,i know this soude funny but if you look under your truck just about underneath where the door hinges are,your park brake cable is routed through the frame,it will rub and cause a squeeking noise in the cab,either zip tie it away from the routing hole or cut a piece of hose and wrap around cable,I prefer the zip tie myself hope this is it and hope this fixes your problem(very common)

thanks for the suggestions, i put the rear wheels on jack stands, ran the tranny up to 50mph. No noise, as soon as i let it down and backed it out, there it was again. Pulled of the wheels, checked all the brakes, transfer case fluid, diff fluid, all was good. these darn u-joints have no grease erts. i'm stll baffeled.

the stock u-joints are sealed and may be dry and causeng the squaek. my freind has a 2000 1500 that had the same problem he had about 80k and they made no noise on jack stands intill we started applying the brakes to put a load on the joint they had no detectable play but after we replaced them the noise was gone. have also seen this problem on afew jeeps and it turned out to be the pinion bearing but these made the noise on the lift with no load.

My vote is on the u-joints. Just because there is no play does not mean they are not dry as mjgjr72 suggested. They will start to squeak first then after the needle bearings start to break down , then you will get play in them.

I had a similar noise you describe twice and both times it was the u-joint. They are not that expensive to replace so it is a good place to start. Eventually you will probably hear a vibration once the bearings go. If you repace with a u joint that has a grease nipple, be sure to position it so you can access it easily to grease it every so often.
