overheating amp

This is mostly for the four door guys.....my amp keeps over heating and going into protect mode whenever i have it on for an extended period of time.....its in my trunk so I was wondering how you guys have amps mounted so they can cool properly

I used to be into stereos, how about some pics of how your amp is mounted, and what the settings are, and I'll give you some tips.

dont have a digi cam so cant take pics......the amp is mounted on top of the box and bass and power knobs are both around half way up.....i think the left and right channel knobs are about 3/4 up

Well your name implies that you are in texas, and it does get quite hot in many areas of texas. This could be your problem as your trunk probably doesn't have any way to vent heated air. also, with your sub being mounted on top of your box, how much top clearance does it get? If you have AC, you may consider putting a pair of 6x9 holes and grilles into the back window to help get some cooler air back there. I've been toying with the idea of trying to rig a fan box for amps, using either 80 or 120mm fans that you can get at computer shops. would be pretty cheap and if it worked, could do wonders for overheating amps.

The main heat on an amp usually comes from the DC/DC convertors, make sure all your connections are good, because low input voltage = more heat.

How much space do you have above your amp?

mount one on each side, one blowing in, one blowing out to get a constant flow... if you can tell that one side of the amp is hotter then the other, make that the outward air flow side, as you dont want the hot air flowing through your entire amp (rigging might be necessary)..

the power going to the speakers or remote should be enough to power the fans, but if you get buff enough fans, you can hook them up to the 12v for super flow

also, make sure there are no airways on the bottom of your amp... if there are, use spacers to mount the amp so youre not blocking the ports (thats how ppl destroy nintendos and such by laying them on the carpet)

btw, smart move mounting your amp on your box... now all they have to do is take out the box and two birds with one stone =/

I had used 3" fans (available at any Radio Shack or surplus store) on an amp rack I built in my old Accord. The amp was mounted in an enclosure that was recessed into the spare tire well & covered with the factory carpeting. With one fan positioned to push & the other to pull, there was a constant flow of air over the amps & my overheating problem was
fixed.

For the wiring I just ran the + from the fan to the remote wire of the amp. That way the fans turned on & off with the amp....

in my focus, i had the amp mounted behind the box attached to the seat and it never over heated

if you saw my car you would never think that there was anything of value in it.....plus in the town i live in im not worried about it at all....thanks for the suggestions guys....ill see what i can rig up in the way of fans

here's how I have mine mounted

Both of them stay pretty cool, well cool enough to keep running. I used to have the problem where one of my amps would shut off and that was because it wasn't wired correctly. Are you sure your amp is ok for running what it's pushing?

The amp is a 500 watt jensen pushing 1 10" infinity kappa sub.....should handle it no problem
