changing the manual trans fluid

I want to change my manual transmission fluid and was wondering if someone can recommend what transmission fluid I should use. Also is there anything I should know about as far as changing the trans fluid or is it just a matter of draining the old fluid and refilling with the new fluid? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

PS....I just got my 240 painted and it looks GREAT!!! pics coming soon!

changing the manual trans fluid

I don't like ununswered posts much.
According to the the Chilton repair manual the fluid should be changed every 30K mile or 24 months...now let me see...I had my car for 11 years, it's at 117K miles and I am trying really hard to remember if this was ever done!!!! hmmm...

Anyway.
Drain it after the engine has reached normal operating temperature.
Use fluid with an APO GL-4 rating, however I don't have anyhting more specific on that.

Watchout for the OIL coming out. It will be HOT!

You'll have to use a long nose funnel or a baster to fill it unless the bottle has a long skinny neck.

Would love to hear from someone who has actually done this, what fluid they used and if shifting actually changed as a result....

anyone ...anyone...

Dimitri

Cool

NOW I GET SO MANY CARS IN MY SHOP I CN'T REMEMBER IF YOU HAVE TO PULL THE SPEED SENSOR TO FILL THAT OR NOT???

NEVERTHELESS, I ALMOST USUALLY DO, FILLING THE FLUID TO THE BOTTEM OF WHERE THE SPEED SENSOR GEAR SHOULD B.

OH, MAKE SURE THE CAR IS LEVEL WHEN DOING THIS, common mistake

Re: changing the manual trans fluid

Thanks guys. I did notice the fill hole is on the side of the transmission I am going to use one of the funnel's with a long tip to refill the fluid after I drain. I'm wondering if the drain plug and fill plug are going to be a bitch to get off. I mean, they 've probably never been removed.

Re: changing the manual trans fluid

Just check if they have crush washers or not, you'd want to replace those or you'll end up with a nice little leak

I think you can use Caltex Texamatic, I'm sure it meets those grades, but it would be best to check your manual or your nearest oil distributor.

Re: changing the manual trans fluid

The plugs are removed using a a 1/2" drive ratchet. Be sure to remove the fill plug first (just incase you can't get it off after you drain the oil). Also, I don't think a funnel will reach down that far. I just went to Home Depot and got some vinyl tubing and made an oil bong.

As far as oil goes, any GL-4 75w90 or 80w90 gear oil will work. Don't use GL-5, as it is corrosive to brass syncros in the tranny.
