stupid gas cap

hi, I own a 95 grand am
it has one of those "wonderful" remote gas cap releases, I guess to prevent people form syphoning my gas
but the problem is, last year I had the exhuast system replaced, and I didnt notice it for a week or so, but somehow they disconnected the remote release. I didnt notice it for a week (went back to college and it gets decent mpg) so by the time I noticed I couldnt just go downtown and bitch. but anyway, enough back story, has anyone ever fixed one of these, or am I just better off removing the spring in the cap, and shaving down the little internal latch.
well any help would be apperciated
