help

i have a 2000 ford taurus, i recently borought it to the shop for a diagnosis.the problem is a pinging noise when accelerating or going up hill.the emissions light has come on but does not stay on consistently.the diagnosisis as follows...
Customer states check engine light on and pings upon acceleration and up hills..connected a scan tool, retrieved code PO402.Tested the DPFE sensor signal=1.6 volts.Tested the DPFE reference voltage and ground O.K. Tested the EGR valve operation , the valave opens, the passages are clear.Ran the KOER Self-test while monitoring the BARO,ETC,IAT O2 sensors and fuel trim pids. All readings normal.Verified engine ping under load. Need to perform Upper engine decardon. Also noticed spark plugs are worn.Fuel filter also needs replaced. COST 700.00 - 800.00$

I told him he was crazy

how hard is it to replace dpfe sensor does the above dianosis seem accurate, i do not trust dealership mechanics as far as price and amount of work goes.should iuse procees of elimination try one thing at a time.i know basics of cars and could do the fuel filter, spark plugs myself.one thing i should add is that the car seems to run with less ping at night, cooler temps.please help.

Re: help

what gas do you run? might be that you need higher or lower grade, my moms sable only pinged under load if the fuel grade was to high

Re: help

The DPFE sensor is very easy to replace. The reference voltage should be .75 to .9 volts. The engine pings because it is running too lean. When the engine is cold the PCM with adjust the fuel trims to richen the fuel air mixture based on engine temp and ambient temp. If the fuel air mixture is more rich the engine runs cooler, this reduces the ping. Replace the DPFE sensor, and disconnect the battery for .5 hour to clear your eng light.

Ok, I understand all that, but where on the 2000 Taurus is this sensor located?
