Hard time starting and rough idle

Bought my 2000 GP gt about 6 months ago and since then this has happened twice. It has a really rough time starting, turns over for a while and eventually gets started. I hit the gas very slightly and that seems to help. The car then runs really rough even when i put the rpms up to about 3000rpms it's still a little rough.

The first time it happened I turned it off, turned it back on, and it started easier but was still rough. So i turned it off and left it for about an hour. I came back to bring it to the mechanic, and the problem was completely gone (of course).

It just did this again the other day, only the problem was fixed the second time i started it, which was only about 5 minutes later.

The car is now running perfectly fine.

Anybody have any ideas? Thanks.

i had a problem similar to this on my '91 z-24. it didn't like to start some times when it was hot. it would crank but not turn over. it turned out that the starter had a flat spot on it. if this is the problem, i don't think there is any diag. that can be done till it wont start at all when hot. hope this helps

Re: Hard time starting and rough idle

Do you have a SES Light on?. If SES Light on then check it with OBD II scanner. Otherwise, in my GTP the problem was a bad MAF Sensor and Coolant Sensor. Sounds rare but its real. Change the Fuel Filter too.

I hope this help.

Thanks

There are no lights on when it happens.

If I try a new fuel filter, is that something I can do myself?

Thanks

Re: Hard time starting and rough idle

Check the fuel filter, and if you can clean the injectors would not harm a bit. If that does not help then check the fuel pressure at the injector.
