2way vs 3way

I have 2-way rear speakers sound good but i notice little bass, nice highs.

Will switching to 3-way speakerd give me more bass, i don't want to add subs.

By the way(no pun intended), does more speaker-ways mean better overall sound? I saw a Pioneer speakers that were 5-way.

Ive been trying to talk my girl into a 3 way but she always tells me no. Your best bet for good sound quality is component speakers.

Re: 2way vs 3way

No. You wont have any more bass. If you take a standard 2 way coaxial they use an extremely simple crossover. With a 3 way coaxial same thing just adds another driver with slightly different freq responce meaning the tweeter on the two way may play from 3000hz and up where was with the 3 way they just use 2 tweeters one with a slightly lower freq beginning point and claim better sound. Components on the hand have much higher quality drivers, require more power and have a much more advanced crossover network. You can get component sets that turn into coaxials but like i said youll still need an amp. You are not going to get massive bass with just coaxials. Plus if you are only using your head unit thats only 20 watts of power. With out adding a sub i doubt you will ever obtain what you are looking for.

increasing the "way" on axial speakers just adds more small mid/tweeter type speakers - it will do NOTHING for bass.

5-way are a gimmic IMO. Who really needs a super super tweeter, I mean c'mon!

But 3-way will ALWAYS sound better than 2-way because 3-way has a definable mid range driver within it which helps seperate sounds a frequencies better than a 2-way can.

What size rear speakers do you have? 6.5" speakers will give you nice mid and high but little bass response. 6 x 9" speakers are used to give a system a little base kick when subs are not part of the eqaution. A good 6 x 9" will definalt give a little more bass response than 6.5" will. Also, not including component systems, a good 3 way will give a fuller sound than a regular 2-way. As SilverY2KCivic siad, it seperates feqeuncies a little better by adding a 3rd tweeter, a super tweeter. ANything more than 3-way is a gimmic if you ask me. If you don't want subs but want a little fuller sound and a little more bass than the 6.5" speakers give, try a good 3-way 6 x 9. MB Qaurt has a really good sounding 6 x 9" 3-Way speaker. I can't remember if it's the discus line or the Reference line. It'll cost a bit of $$ ($200-220) but it will probably give you a little more of what you are looking for since you don't want subs.

Re: 2way vs 3way

My rear speakers are Clarion 2-way 6x9's, i have Alpine head unit. Bass sounds weak compared to other speakers. The high's are nice & clear though.

I'll look into 3-way higher end models like MB Quart, Infinitly, Alpine, ect. speakers. thanks again.

you will not get more base by getting a 3 way. they are just tweeters for more highs. if you want the most base out of a 6/9 or 6/5 speaker get a good brand name. in my opinion i like infiniti speakers, they give nice clear sould with a good amount of base... 2 cents

If your trying to tell him MB Quart is not a good brand name and that those speakers can't kick out bass, you're wrong. Maybe you've never heard them, but MB Quart is a VERY GOOD BRAND. The 3-way MB Quarts sound fuller, thanks to the extra tweeter. That is the purpose of it. I am well aware of what it does. Those speakers will add extra bass nicely, MB Quart makes very good stuff. Like I said, the 3-way will just produce a fuller sound. If he hears them and compares, he'll know extactly what I mean. Still, MB QUARTis a very good qaulity brand.

Re: 2way vs 3way

Narrowed my choices of 6x9 3-ways down to these.

1. JL Audio TR690-Txi (first pick)
2. Polk PLK DB690
3. Infinity Reference INI 9603I
4. Pioneer PIO TSA6970R (last pick)

Re: 2way vs 3way

Have you though about infinity kappa series. I have some of them in my car (componants up front, and 3-ways in the back) and they sound really nice. My old ls had infinity refrences all around, and they sound really nice too, but the kappa's sound even better! They cost a pretty penny though!
