Question Allright gentleman I have a good one for ya.

I have a very strange problem with my 1990 non-turbo.Every once in a while I will be driving and my rpm gauge will nail right down to zero and my "check engine light" will come on. This is very frustrating especially when I pull up to the stop light next to a Prelude or Integra that I want to smoke!!! I kinda of need my RPM guage I can turn off the car to reset it but then sometimes it will just happen right off the bat. If anyone else has had this problem or know any possible solutions please fill me in it would be greatly apprecieted.
thanks for reading guys!!

You need to get a code puller and find out what it is.

I have a similar problem. My tach shuts off completely and only comes back on after a restart. This only happens at redline in 4th for me though.

A similar sounding thing happened in my Accord. The entire engine would shut off, gauges go to zero, lose power steering, all that. Turns out it was a faulty ignition switch, which was replaced as a recall. May it's your ignition switch?

Re: Allright gentleman I have a good one for ya.

his situation doesn't seem like ignition though... did any rx-7s come with any type of governor? maybe its a faulty governor or something... although I don't think any of them had one, thats all I could think of

Re: Allright gentleman I have a good one for ya.

it's a device that you hook to your diagnostic port on your car. You follow the directions on the device. This device will read the codes your car's computer has stored. These are called DTC's or diagnostic trouble codes. By reading the codes and looking them up in the book, online, or on the reader itself depending on the model you can find the problem or get hints to the problem. A word of caution though. Just because you don't pull a code doesn't mean your car is running quite right.

I'm not sure I'd have to look that one up, but I would either guess off the top of my head the crank angle sensor or an ignition pickup sensor.

Re: Allright gentleman I have a good one for ya.

Isn't the speedometer cable cable on the driver side of the tranny? I just kinda assumed thats what it was? Looks like it to me.
