HEY HOPE SOMEONE CAN HELP ME...
I have a 1989 Chev Cavalier with a 2.0L, 4 cylinder engine with DSI or direct spark ignition. The car will run for a week or so and then i'll be driving one day or it will either die with driving, or when i park it for a bit and then go to start it again it won't start. It cranks like it's out of gas. I always know when it's going to die on me because the radio cuts in and out like the station isn't set quite right. I've replaced tested my altenator, replaced my fuel injector, a new crank shaft censor and it's still doing the same thing. I had someone who suggested it might be the exterior coils on my distributor but instead i have a DSI, no distributor. It's been sitting at the mechanics for 2 days and they've had it running for about an hour and it hasnt died yet. so obviously it's an intermittent problem..they's absolutly sick of seeing my car there. LOL! Can someone please reply if they have any ideas or suggestions. Thanx so much. toxic_3186 |

Re: 89 Cavy. no one knows what's wrong with my stupid car!!!
sounds strange, have you changed the fuel filter at all? fuel filter could be clogged up bad and it aint getting enough gas. i have had similiar probs with my 90 cav. i dont know for sure if that is it, just a suggestion.

I believe your radio is providing a good clue. If the radio is actually loosing the station then it sounds like you may have a ground fault. Replace BOTH battery cables and use dielectric grease on both ends. Also be sure to clean the connection on the body, motor, and starter with a wire brush (a dremel works great) first. These cars unlike older ones will not run with the battery disconnected, which is what happens when the connection is lost.
If the radio is staying on station but picking up extra noise (static) then you may look at the plug wires. My 89 eats plug wires, and it always will restart when cold. I hope this helps. |
