engine noise

I thought I would ask here to see if anyone else has had a similar problem that I'm current experiencing. I have a 92 Ford Taurus GL with 106,000 miles on it.

I currently am having a slight problem with low oil pressure so this may or may not be related to the 2nd problem. The oil light is coming on after I have been driving it enough for the engine to be good and warmed up but only comes on when sitting still with the engine idling

The 2nd problem is that after I have been driving it long enough for the engine to be warmed up anytime I accelerate when going down a hill or on a level street the engine starts making a very noticeable rattling noise. If I let off the gas the noise stops. It also makes the noise if I have to accelerate fast as well.

The oil light is not on at the same times it makes the noise so I'm not sure if the two are related.

To me this sounds like the oil pump needs to be replaced but the place that worked on it (which replaced the oil pressure switch) suggested that it was time for a new engine because of the rattling noise. I have a feeling they really didn't look into the real reason for the noise and just took a guess.

So what I want to know is if the oil pump is wore out could it cause the above mentioned noise that I have been hearing?

I'm trying to decide if I should just have the oil pump replaced but if it won't fix both problems then I don't want to waste the money.

There is a good possibility that the rattling noise and the low oil pressure are both symptons of worn crank and rod bearings.If that is the case, then you will be wasting your money on a new oil pump. I would try and get a second opinion at another repair shop before you make any decision, a test run on rollers and the use of a stethescope will tell the mechanic where your problem is.

I have been researching this a little further and noticed that I forgot to mention that back in January I had the Timing Chain replaced as well as the water pump.

The reason I even mention this is because I have read that the Rattling noise could be caused by the Timing Chain if it is not adjusted correctly.
