something interesting
thought you guys might like to read this. since one of the most common topics is changing gears, and what gears to go with. sometimes you can over do it when changing gears

Re: something interesting
i guess the only way 4.10s would benifit you if you had slicks.... or you jus got on it easy and once you hit like 10 mph punch it, and you had some sticky ass street tires

Re: something interesting
well gearing is really related to hp, if you have more hp, you can run more gear, but if you put too much gear in a car with too few ponies, it will be spinning higher than its powerband, and youll be accelerating slower than you would with lower gearing. the way i look is if you pass the traps in second or third gear, you need more gear, but if you hit overdrive halfway down, then its time to step back down a little.

Re: something interesting
id say either the 3.42's or 3.73's would be great, but its always been my stand that 4.10s are to deep for a street car anyway

Re: something interesting
The guys at www.camarov6.com always said that 3.73s were THE BEST... their reasoning was pretty much the same as the article, w/ 4.10s instead of finishing at the top of third @ max power, you'd finish at the bottom of sluggish forth @ low power, which would actually slow you donwn at the end.

dont get me wrong joseph, i love the awsome power of 3:73's too, but just last night i got taken off the line twice because of the 3:73 gearing in an 88 RS. the first time i just hammered it off the line and did nothing but spin, then the second time i decided to ease into and then floored it when i got to about 15mph, the ass end slid sideways about 8 feet and tired to U-turn on me. the driver behind me was scared shitless and left in awe
of course once i hooked up i blew the other driver's doors off in no time. but it was a cavalier!!! also take into consideration that my tires are completly bald, but i'm startin to think that 3:42's would have been more practical

Re: something interesting
it seems like the decrease in performance from too high a gear ratio comes with the loss of traction, i dont know why theyre downplaying it thought i mean with a strong rear and some nice traction (z compound, slicks?) wont it still give you better acceleration provided the tires dont break loose?
