I was wondering if anyone has swapped a Ford 5.0 or Chevy 350 into say a 1983 528 like this one, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...477235139&rd=1 .
or if there was a site of someone who did it? But a few questions anyway. Does anyone know how much the I6's that came in the early 80's 5 series wiegh in at? Is there enough room in the engine bay for a V8? (I figure there is becuase BMW started using V8s of course and those things are huge on account of the OHC) Who doesn't think this would be the most cool thing. 400hp, 6sp Early 80's BMW 528? Obviously I haven't put too much thought into this, I just want me next car to be super bad. So, tear it apart if it's A UMB or B:not plausible. Thanks |

Re: Swapping an American V8 into ame early 528
Howdy.
There are several reasons the BMW motor has its own appeal. One of those is reliability. Also, the stock version of the US 3.5 motor has an 8 to 1 compression ratio, which makes it a prime candidate for turbo charging or supercharging. The motors will take lots of boost without having to upgrade engine internals. One big reason for hot-rodding the big six motor is engine configuration and torque. A straight-six motor generates gobs of torque. The only thing better than that would be something like the Deusenberg straight-eight, which were incredible. I suppose the biggest reason for NOT putting a Chevy V-8 in a 528 or 535 is the detriment to the total performance package. Yes, you want a car that's 'super bad'. I want a car that hauls ass, sure; but I want it to handle well, too. The straight six in the 535 hauls ass off the line and handles great. The handling can be brought wayyyy up by proper selection of springs, struts, tires, and body-stiffening. If you just want to drag race, get a 455 out of a 1968 Oldsmobile station wagon. You'll get 510 foot-pounds of torque, 375 horsepower (and that's STOCK!). Then you can wrap it around a tree trying to take the first turn. (Ok, I'm a sicko, but I keep imagining taking the 455 engine and transaxle out of a 1968 Olds Toronado...and making a mid-engine BMW. You'd get to keep the handling!) It would be interesting to know the weight of the 3.5 big six versus the Chevy 350. Yes, BMW makes its own V-8, but I suspect they use more aluminum and other lighter metals to keep the weight down and maintain the level of handling for which BMWs are famous. Flunky |
